One of the world’s leading OTT platforms Netflix has acquired Night School Studio, an independent American video game developer. Known for popular titles like Oxenfree, Night School is the first game studio to join Netflix. The announcement comes just after a day Netflix added three new games to its membership catalogue in Poland, Italy, and Spain.
The studio was founded in 2014 by Disney’s former senior game designer Sean Krankel, and Adam Hines, a former lead writer at Telltale Games. The announcement was made in a blog post from Night School Studio’s official website. In founder Sean Krankel’s words, the studios’ explorations in narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting diverse storytellers was such a “natural pairing”.
“It felt like both teams came to this conclusion instinctively”, Krankel added.
Netflix plans to continue the existing titles from Night School Studio
Mike Verdu, the vice president of game development, claimed that the plan is now to continue bringing exclusive games designed for every kind of gamer and any level of play that will be included with its membership, and there’s no plan to include any in-app purchases in the games.
On the other hand, Night School promised to keep making the sequel of Oxenfree and other games as well. The studio said that the Netflix team has shown “the utmost care for protecting the studio culture and creative vision”, prompting this decision.
For the last few years, Netflix has been trying to stake its hold in the gaming industry as a content category like its films, animation, and reality TV shows. The acquisition is just a part of this process. As Night School Studio has a great grab in storytelling through its games, Netflix’s fans out there can wish to experience the same as they do with what Netflix offers.
