American indie video game development company Thatgamecompany reportedly receives a $160M investment from TPG and Sequoia. The entire amount will be primarily focused on developing the company’s hit title Sky: Children of the Light and stuff relating to the game such as providing a better service to the players, game development, and expansion of the game. With the funding in hand, the company is now ready to take things to the next stage.
Another important announcement came from the company regarding Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull’s that is he will be joining the company as a principal advisor on creative culture and strategic growth. Founded by Jenova Chen and Kellee Santiago in 2006, the company has many successful titles in its pocket such as Journey, Flower, Sky: Children of the Light, etc.

The fund will be invested through TPG’s Tech Adjacencies fund. ‘’We’re proud to have the opportunity to partner with a visionary leader like Jenova to support Thatgamecompany’s next stage of growth,” said Arun Agarwal, managing director at TPG.
“We want to see a game that emotionally appeals to people of all ages, identities, and backgrounds within a single experience. Animated feature films have had genre-defining moments with Snow White and Toy Story, and we will continue working toward this moment in the gaming world“

The company intends to keep the appeal and acceptance the same as it has now. That’s why its California-based studio will keep continuing to support the community and put more focus on creating titles that go in harmony with the values of Thatgamecompany.
On the other hand, Catmull’s joining the company will impact much bigger in the upcoming days. “I’m honored that Jenova and the studio have asked me to share my learnings on building an enduring creative culture befitting its ambition to provide enriching and accessible interactive experiences for a worldwide audience,” he said. With the experience of making an award-winning title like Sky, Thatgamecompany is bound to bring amazing titles in near future.
