Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher series could release as mobile games, suggests CD PROJEKT Group CEO

Two huge hits!

The title is super exciting, right? Yeah, I felt the same. The recent CD PROJEKT Group’s annual earnings call was somewhat of massive news for mobile gaming enthusiasts as the joint CEO Michal Nowakowski has indicated that two of the popular franchises in recent times, Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher series, could be released as mobile games.

CD Projekt, the renowned Polish developer, has garnered a strong reputation within the gaming community over the past two decades. Rising to prominence with their 2007 hit, The Witcher, they have consistently delivered successful titles for both PC and consoles. Among their notable releases is Cyberpunk 2077, the futuristic title.

The Witcher series has seen plenty of titles over the years, with the call also indicating it to kickstart a new trilogy, expanding the universe presented in past Witcher games. Meanwhile, Cyberpunk 2077, even though bug-ridden during its initial run, was praised for many intriguing aspects, while the latest in the franchise Phantom Liberty sales topped 5 million copies in 2023.

While Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher are in the plans, no announcement made yet

During the earnings call, significant details were discussed regarding both IPs, with particular interest focusing on the possibility of mobile adaptations.

In response to the question regarding the licensing of IPs for mobile games, Nowakowski stated that they are indeed considering such a move for their big IPs, including Cyberpunk 2077 and the Witcher games, also stating that they will convey more info when the time comes.

As for the business model of any potential partnerships, whether it involves a one-off licensing fee or a different arrangement, details have not been disclosed at this time. While CD Projekt did give us some mobile titles based on the Witcher series such as Gwent: Rogue Mage, a full-fledged title is still missing.

While the CEO suggests they have nothing to announce just yet, discussions and opportunities in this regard are actively being pursued. As for the business model of any potential partnerships, whether it involves a one-off licensing fee or a different arrangement, details have not been disclosed at this time.

Cyberpunk 2077 can be a game changer for mobile

Out of the two games mentioned, I see Cyberpunk as the one with more potential since the mobile platform is yet to have good games with a futuristic take on it. Cyberpunk 2077 is surely one of the games the developers should try to bring on mobile, but I see there are difficulties surrounding it. It was compelling in terms of storyline and gameplay, and the visuals were top notch too.

Having it on mobile might see some various cuts and quality downgrades, but I believe players will surely insist on getting the game for their devices. A bigger size won’t be an issue if the game can deliver a bug-free compelling experience, with both campaign and multiplayer modes added.
