Japanese Developer and Publisher SEGA are eyeing the release of both the Japanese and Global versions of their action RPG Persona 5: The Phantom X. This was revealed in SEGA’s annual revenue report for the Fiscal Year FY2024/3 where they have mentioned “considering” this prospect.

Persona 5: The Phantom X has already seen launches in China, Taiwan, and Korea

Persona 5: Phantom of the Night, or P5: The Phantom X, is an urban adventure JRPG crafted by Perfect World Games’ Black Feather Studio in the critically acclaimed Persona series of games, officially authorized by SEGA with supervision from ATLUS.

First announced in March of 2023, the game was released on April 12 in China as an open beta, followed by launches in Taiwan and South Korea on April 18, 2024. The game brings an immersive gaming experience thanks to an original story-based narrative. You play as a high school student named Wonder in a vibrant campus city who navigates between school life and a parallel world called the Metaverse.

The gameplay itself looks a lot like Persona 5, but it’s been simplified for mobile devices. Though there isn’t any concrete word on how it’s doing there, SEGA’s considering expanding it worldwide which aligns with their intention to reach a broader audience, so it’s probably raking in the cash since they have also mentioned it as “starting off as expected” in their annual report.

Anyway, I will be letting you know the details in this space once the official announcement of a global or Japan launch of Persona 5: The Phantom X is out until then stay tuned for updates.

Fall Guys is undoubtedly one of the most fun experiences you can get on a game and thus, the mobile inspirations are plenty. Joining that list would be Sonic Toys Party, featuring SEGA’s Sonic-themed Fall Guys-like gameplay where players are pitted against each other in obstacle battles, with the leaked trailer also hinting at how the gameplay will be on mobile.

Sonic Toys Party has plenty of competition in the mobile market

Fall Guys was a trendsetter in the casual gaming market, and after its launch, it has inspired plenty of games, especially mobile. Stumble Guys was one of the earliest releases that went on to be highly popular. It was followed by NetEase Games’ Eggy Party while Tencent is also picking up the pace to launch Project: Fun Party (formerly DreamStar) at the earliest.

Eggy Party Skill Guide

With these in the mix, Sonic Toys Party wants to bank on the genre with their highly popular Sonic IP involved. I see this as a clever tactic though, have Sonic characters in a Fall Guys setting and have no one guess where the inspiration is from, clever. Coming to the game, as I watched the trailer for this Sonic-themed Fall Guys clone, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and skepticism.

The UI looks to be very messy, but there is a hint of multiple gameplay modes. There are a decent number of camera angles showcased, and the maps look very interesting. No doubt, we all love Sonic but the presentation wasn’t very appealing compared to other games in the mix, so the game needs some work, which the developers will do since this doesn’t look to be the final product.

Don’t bombard me with the release date questions since this isn’t an official announcement. Given the rumors surrounding the game, I believe makers might push for an official update soon. Remember SEGA registering a trademark for Sonic & Friends? Sonic Toys Party might also be SEGA’s effort to fulfill its desire to reach a broader mobile game market audience.

SEGA has been targeting the mobile market for a while now, and the acquisition of popular game franchise Angry Birds maker Rovio Entertainment Corporation is a clear indication of how they would like to take things ahead. The recent interview of Shuji Utsumi, the CEO of SEGA also gave us the same thought, when he shared that their current focus was on the mobile market while trying to improve the operations on the platform.

SEGA CEO says the mobile is a treasure that is unused right now given their list of great IPs

Speaking to CNBC, Shuji Utsumi shed light on various discussions such as international markets of SEGA, acquisitions, utilizing the company’s assets, and more. If we were to sum up the important part of the talk, it would be how SEGA is looking to capitalize on the mobile market with the IPs they have.

The CEO emphasized the acquisition of Rovio as a key move to leverage their iconic characters, such as Sonic, on a global scale, particularly in the ever-expanding mobile gaming market.

Image via SEGA/Rovio

On being asked if mobile is the platform that they are putting a lot of focus on at the moment, Utsumi stated: “Mobile is pretty much an area where we haven’t excelled historically, and we’re working to improve that. Well, we’re pretty much not good at it in the past, so we are trying to improve that operation. Also, we have a lot of great IPs that we’re not utilizing in the mobile area. It’s a treasure that is not really unused right now.”

Speaking of the audience market, Utsumi stated that despite its distinctly Japanese game titles like Yakuza, the company’s financial landscape reveals that only 30% of its revenue is generated domestically, with 70% flowing in from international markets. A similar track goes for Sonic, which boasts a remarkable 95% of its business outside Japan.

This indicates the audience demonstrates a consistent appreciation for quality content, irrespective of its origin. SEGA’s success in presenting games with global appeal is evidently a contributing factor to their international performance.

With the interview, we can suggest that SEGA is looking to enhance its global presence, especially in the mobile market, by capitalizing on its rich portfolio of valuable IPs, just like the CEO mentioned. This development is particularly exciting for mobile gaming enthusiasts like us, as we can actually expect some popular games from SEGA which did not see mobile releases to arrive, and I believe this would be the first step that the Japanese gaming giant should consider.

In a startling turn of events, SEGA and Yoko Taro’s recently released RPG 404 GAME RE:SET has announced its farewell to the fans on the mobile platforms, and will shut down on January 5, 2024. What’s more surprising is that this decision came a year of run after its launch.

404 GAME RE:SET failed to generate enough interest according to Producer

404 GAME RE:SET was initially revealed on February 10, 2023, and the official launch in Japan was on April 25, 2023. The RPG, based on the game Error Game Reset, features third-person battles with shooting-like elements in a cyberworld setting brought back to life with the inclusion of female characters that form the crux of the game.

404 GAME RE:SET Japan, 404 GAME RE:SET

Truth be told, 404 GAME RE:SET didn’t quite live up to the expectations, especially coming from a company like SEGA. The game’s launch didn’t generate much buzz, with lackluster download numbers. Players voiced their dissatisfaction with the gameplay, finding it subpar. As a result, just six months into its release, the announcement of an end of service comes as no surprise.

In the announcement blog, the Producer Gosuke Nakamura stated that despite efforts to make it an all-collaboration project with widespread involvement and various initiatives to engage players, the game didn’t generate enough excitement to sustain its service. Hence, despite their best efforts and the support of dedicated players, the team couldn’t find a way to continue the service successfully, leading to the difficult decision to end it.

Hence, 404 GAME RE:SET will conclude in Chapter 10, with Chapter 9 released on December 13, 2023, and Chapter 10 on January 5, 2024, on the date of shut down. To access Chapter 10, you must download the game data between the release of Chapter 9 and the maintenance on January 5.

After meeting all the necessary requirements, SEGA Europe is all set to acquire Rovio Entertainment Corporation, the renowned developer behind the globally popular game franchise Angry Birds. The deal which was first announced in April 2023 will be finalized soon, currently estimated to take place on August 17th.

Rovio had previously rejected Playtika’s $738 million offer before agreeing to SEGA’s

In April, there were reports that SEGA was set to acquire Rovio for an estimated deal of €706 million ($775 million), which came true when SEGA officially confirmed the deal later in the same month. This was after Israel-based Playtika Ltd, known for its Slot machines and Card games offered a $738 million acquisition deal in January, which was a mere $37 million less compared to the offer Rovio accepted later on.

However, even though the deal was finalized in April, the successful completion of this offer hinged on several conditions set by Sega Europe. This was about obtaining regulatory approvals and securing a minimum of 90% of Rovio’s shares. In April, It was revealed that shareholders holding around 49.1 percent of Rovio’s outstanding shares and votes had expressed their agreement to the offer.

However, on August 8th, the final results of the deal revealed that a total of 73,397,174 shares from Rovio shareholders have been tendered, accounting for 96.3% of all issued and outstanding shares and votes in Rovio. In addition, 100 percent of the options have been tendered in the offer.

Rovio joining the SEGA family will look to unlock new possibilities

In conclusion, Rovio has met the 90% threshold and has received the necessary regulatory clearances to become a part of the Sega Family as soon as the offer is completed. To further accommodate shareholders who have yet to accept the offer, SEGA Europe is initiating a “Subsequent Offer Period” scheduled from August 11th to August 25th.

With the deal all but done, this is good news for us fans. Given SEGA’s legacy of creating excellent and memorable titles and Rovio’s products being fun to play, the inclusion of Rovio into the SEGA family will unlock a realm of fresh gaming possibilities. Hopefully, we get a mix of both the creative sides soon, and mostly an experience to remember.

SEGA has reportedly filed a trademark application on the Japanese trademark website Chizai Watch. The application was initially submitted on June 23rd, and the trademark seems to be a new Sonic game titled Sonic & Friends, yet another title in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe.

The trademark includes categories that strongly indicate a mobile game

In 2021, when SEGA was keeping fans eagerly anticipating its upcoming game, a trademark surfaced that unveiled the title Sonic Frontiers. Similarly, another trademark from SEGA has come to light, following a similar pattern, which might be an indication of a new title.
