Tencent Games have outlined its plans to develop more educational games at the International Conference on Serious Games and Applications for Health (SeGaH). The latest move by the collaboration to develop educational games undoubtedly signals the intent of Tencent to not only appeal to casual gamers in the video game market. This would also ensure that gaming becomes useful educationally for many people.
What are serious games
As the name suggests “educational games“, these games usually come with a great emphasis on educational or technological aspects. They are often intended to provide educational values to students and anybody willing to learn in a variety of fields. One such field is the healthcare sector which has already seen a number of training games designed to replicate real-life scenarios accurately. Unlike regular video games which are intended to be aimed at a casual audience, serious games are the ones that go hand-in-hand with academic learning.
The serious games market in China is still in its infancy, but it is expected to reach an annual market share of around 210 million USD by the year 2022.
Tencent’s plans
Tencent has confirmed that they are working on an educational game called “Pavlov: Brain’it On”. The game features a variety of puzzles designed for all age groups. The puzzles are said to improve a variety of brain-related functions such as attention span and the ability to process information faster. The game was teased at the SeGaH conference and is said to be under development. Tencent has also reemphasized its commitment to corporate social responsibility. More details are expected to follow soon.
Serious games are a great way to bridge the gap between gaming and learning. The future of the market looks promising and it may help break the notion among those that believe gaming is a harmful hobby.
