MOONTON Games and Riot Games have resolved their global intellectual property disputes through a recent settlement agreement. On April 2, 2024, following extensive communication, both parties officially signed the agreement, leading Riot Games to withdraw its related lawsuits.
The long-running court battle between MOONTON Games and Riot Games gets a closure
The controversy dates back to 2017Â when Riot filed a $2.9 million lawsuit against MOONTON for Copyright Infringement. Again, on May 9, 2022, Riot Games filed its second lawsuit against MOONTON, claiming that the latter’s game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang copied parts of Riot’s popular game, League of Legends. In this plagiarism accusation, Riot stated that Mobile Legends: Bang Bang had similarities in its campaign, trailers, in-game skins, and other elements.
Riot Games even asked Google to remove Mobile Legends: Bang Bang from the Play Store. After it was taken down, MOONTON secretly released a modified version of the game. Riot Games compiled all the similarities between the two games in their lawsuit, including campaign content, character designs, trailers, and community reactions.
In November 2022, the District Court ruling dismissed the case between Riot Games and MOONTON. The court suggested that the parties settle their disputes in China, where it was considered more appropriate to address the matter given the Mobile Legends maker and Riot Games’ parent company Tencent is based in China.
The resolution between MOONTON Games and Riot Games marks the end of a highly discussed controversy in recent times. It stands alongside other notable disputes in the gaming industry, with the Apple vs. Epic Games case being one of the most prominent and widely debated. We have no details on whether they have come to a monetary agreement for lawsuit withdrawal, but it’s fair to say that both parties will find some relief now.
