The dispute between Epic Games and Apple, which appeared to have reached a conclusion in April, has been reignited once again. Following the rejection of anti-steering provisions in April, Apple has reportedly made the decision to intervene in the Supreme Court in the Epic Games case.
Apple continues its effort to revoke the April ruling over anti-steering provision policy
In a court filing on June 3rd that was reported by Reuters, Apple has stated its intention to request the justices to review and consider its appeal following the ruling made on Friday, June 6th, by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.
In April, Apple won lawsuit an appeals court verdict against Epic Games over App Store antitrust laws challenge, however, Apple’s policy was deemed unlawful and the claim was rejected. This allows the developers to link to outside payments, much to Apple’s disappointment.
Apple’s anti-steering provision policy restricts iOS developers from using specific methods, like in-app links, to communicate out-of-app payment options to users. This, if not revoked, takes out a significant share of profits from them. Apple had already conveyed its plans on seeking a further review, and now it has followed suit.
The ongoing saga between these two giants shows no signs of relenting
At this point, the saga is clearly getting tiresome for all the parties involved, but they won’t back out. All hell broke lose in 2020 when the Fortnite maker challenged Apple’s limits on games having different in-app purchasing mechanisms than the one provided by the App Store. Tim Sweeney had previously criticized Apple’s 30% revenue cut on each App Store purchase.
The conflict arose after Apple removed the Fortnite game from the App Store because Epic devised a method to avoid paying a 30% fee on users’ in-app purchases. Epic also previously paid Apple a hefty sum after being ordered by the court to do so for not adhering to Apple guidelines and breaching their contract. While the case is running hot, it doesn’t seem to come to a conclusion.
