Mario Kart Tour, Nintendo‘s famous racing title might have just crossed the finish line, with Nintendo confirming that the game will not receive any new content after the October 4 update. The message was delivered by the developers to the players in the form of an in-game message announcing that the game will not see any new content from next month onwards.

Nintendo used to add new drivers, carts, and tracks with each update in Mario Kart Tour

Mario Kart in itself is a classic with the series being famous through many generations, Mario Kart Tour was aimed to extend this legacy on mobile when released in 2019. The game did good in terms of statistics and managed to garner some attention from fellow fans. Nintendo used to keep everything updated with many updates which brought new content to the game. This new content ranged from new drivers, carts, and even new battle tracks.

However, as per the news shared by the developers in the game, this will soon end as no new content will be added after its October 4 update. The game thus will have no new riders, carts, and tracks coming its way post the October update, This might hint at the developer’s intent of focusing on Mario Kart 9 plans, but that’s another story.

The in-game message read, “From 10/04/2023 (Wed) on, tours will consist of content from tours that have appeared before,” the message reads. “No new courses, drivers, karts, or gliders will be added following the Battle Tour beginning 10/04/2023 (Wed). We hope you continue to enjoy playing Mario Kart Tour.

The game did a great job of providing fresh content to the fans and did the overall series justice, There were 50 plus tracks added to the game since the launch in 2019 over 40 of which were based on real-world locations such as New York, Tokyo, Berlin, and Paris. The services will end after the October update, however, the game will still be available on Google Play and Apple Store.

Mario Kart Tour focuses strongly on the Character-Kart-Glider combo in order to get the best scores on a given race. To obtain the newest characters, or the rarest kart, you can either buy from the shop or win from the pipe. If you’re a daily player, you’ll find yourself slowly building up a collection of coins. There are multiple sources you can get them, with some more prominent than others. As a general hint from playing these sort of games – make sure you always have a healthy stack of coins (you never know whats coming up in the store)! So today in this article we will extensively talk about Mario Kart Tour Coin Farming Guide.

How to get more Coins in Mario Kart Tour

1. Races

Per day, you can earn up to 300 coins across all 16 cups. Coins are scattered in the tracks and also come up in item boxes. You have a small chance of starting a coin frenzy during a race also, in top pole positions. It is important to log on each day and complete these 300 coins first as it resets each day, and the other sources can be collected at any time during the season. Some tracks feature more coins than others and have layouts better suited for collecting. For example, Koopa Troopa Beach and Mario Circuit suit for quick coin collecting.

2. Challenges

Challenges are a big source of your seasonal coin incomes and can be obtained through multiple methods. Some seasonal cards reward rubies as prizes for completing tasks, some reward stars. In either, completing a line, row, or entire card rewards you with a small number of coins.

3. Coin Rush

Mario Kart Tour, Coin Rush, Mario Kart

This, almost hidden game mode involves playing as a Golden Mario and collecting coins around the New York Minute racetrack. Before starting the game, you are given the option of starting the minigame with a multiplier (using rubies). These multipliers raise the total amount of coins you can collect over the track. You can also start a coin rush using a ticket (obtained this season through gifts) without multipliers. This game mode is a tradeoff over whether you like your chances at winning through the pipe or buying your own characters and vehicles in the shop.

4. Gifts

Each season has a prize track, alongside each cup, where you can obtain gifts by collecting grand stars. These grand stars can be obtained through winning races, and beating the score thresholds, or completing challenges. In each gift, you can collect coins, tickets, characters and more. These are a great passive earner of coins whilst you complete your challenges and cups.

5. Gliders

Mario Kart Tour, Glider, Coin Rush

A lesser-known hint for collecting coins is to use the gold glider. Gliders in Mario Kart Tour have a ‘plus’ ability, where they have a higher chance of getting a certain item from an item box. This High-end glider has a higher chance of pulling a coin from boxes in any race. Use this on a track with x3 item characters, to then increase your chances further of starting a coin frenzy.

Nintendo has always delivered blockbuster hits in the gaming market and Mario Kart Tour is turning out to be no different as it is confirmed to amass over 200 million dollars in player revenue as well as over 200 million downloads worldwide. These staggering numbers continued to cement the mobile spin-off of the long-standing Mario Kart franchise as one of the top racing games for smartphone devices.

A smash hit right off the bat

The staggering numbers amassed by Mario Kart hasn’t been a slow upward trajectory by any means. The game was considered to be a smash hit right from day 1. Launched on September 25, 2019, the game racked up 17.8 million dollars in revenue within the first 11 days and went on amass an astonishing 100 million dollars in less than six months.

Defying the critics

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for though. The game received a mixed reception upon release with an average Metacritic score of around 59/100. Critics lambasted the fact that the game’s ‘gacha’ type of nature, the monthly subscription feature as well as the absence of certain prominent characters in the game, most notably Luigi, who had been featured in all the trailers and promotional campaigns in the build up to the game’s release.

Mario Kart Tour Characters

Nonetheless, Nintendo’s previous track record as well as the glamorous reputation surrounding the Mario Kart IP has ensured that the game has become a smash hit on mobile devices even with the subpar reviews from critics. Mario Kart Tour is particularly popular in the United States with around 76 million dollars of revenue out of 200 coming from the United States alone. These fantastic numbers mean that Mario Kart Tour will be at the forefront of the mobile racing game market for quite some time.

GamingonPhone’s next instalment in the Mario Kart Tour coverage series is the Mario Kart Tour Items section. Tour gave us new items, returning items from older games, and ever present staple items across the Mario Kart series.

Basic Items in Mario Kart Tour

Let’s start with the basic items available to all characters.

1. Banana

Mario Kart Tour Items

Needs no explanation, a truly classic item since Mario Kart’s creation. In Tour, these are scaled rather large and make for a challenge to avoid.

2. Green Shell

Mario Kart Tour Items

Another memorable icon in the Mario Kart series, the green shell. Like the banana, this item has been slowly increasing in size over the past few Kart games and makes for a tricky manoeuvre to avoid.

3. Red Shell

Mario Kart Tour Items

On top of its increased size, the Red Shell has proven to be the most terrifying item in Tour, homing in on the driver in front of you, and flicking them into the air. It seems this item gets stronger every game.

4. Spiny Shell

Mario Kart Tour Items

The bane of every frontrunner’s existence. The Spiky (or more commonly known; Blue) Shell reappears in Mario Kart Tour. Since its mechanics change in Mario Kart 7, the Spiky Shell travels along the ground, interfering with other racers besides first place.

5. Bob-omb

The bob-omb is still one of the most satisfying items to pull off successfully. On Tour’s smaller scaled tracks, this item is quite literally a ‘blast’ to use.

6. Mushroom

Mushrooms are another key factor to Mario Kart’s success, allowing creativity with shortcuts and a boost for the player in lower positions.

7. Mega Mushroom

Making its first appearance in Mario Kart Wii, the Mega Mushroom is a useful alternative to a Star or bullet bill. In Mario Kart Tour, this item is useful for rolling over your opponents and generating quick points.

8. Blopper

Mario Kart Tour Items

The infamous blooper has a love/hate relationship with many players. However, in Tour, Nintendo incorporated the touch screen to rub the Blooper Ink off your screen – an interesting new mechanic.

9. Bullet Bill

Mario Kart Tour Items

The Bullet Bill is a fan favourite, and wouldn’t miss a single Kart title. Adjustments have been made for it to suit the style of Tour, with a shorter life span and speed.

10. Lightning

Nobody is safe from the Lightning bolt. Zapping all players in the race, it turns them small, and makes them squishable by larger players!

11. Coin

Mario Kart Tour Items

The coin was reintroduced to the series in Mario Kart 7, and grants two coins in Tour.

12. Super Horn

The Spiny Shell’s worst enemy: The Super Horn makes its return. This item sends a shockwave to players or items inside the user’s immediate radius.

Character-unique items in Mario Kart Tour

Next up, the character-unique items. These items belong to a limited amount of drivers and have a different effect on the racetrack.

1. Giant Banana

Characters: Donkey Kong, Morton Koopa Jr.

The Giant Banana, first seen in Double Dash, is a Banana with attitude. It is twice as big as a normal one, and causes a large spinout upon impact.

2. Triple Green Shell

Mario Kart Tour Items

Characters: Koopa Troopa, Dry Bones, Iggy Koopa, Lakitu

A regular occurrence in the Kart series, Triple Green Shells have now moved to the character-specific items. They rotate around your kart, and send off to hit other racers.

3. Bowser’s Shell

Characters: Bowser, Dry Bowser, Bowser Jr.

One of the most powerful and damaging items in Tour, is the Bowsers Shell. This giant shell rips through the track, taking out any player in its huge radius.

4. Double Bob-ombs

Characters: Mario (Musician), Shy Guy, Roy Koopa, Wario

A new item to Mario Kart, the Double Bob-omb, provides a simple and unique new item mechanic. Spreading the course with Bob-ombs, it raises the blast radius of a singular Bob-omb.

5. Triple Mushrooms

Mario Kart Tour Items

Characters: Toad, Toadette

Triple Mushrooms have also been moved to the character-specific section. Nothing new here, just the triple variety of the standard mushroom.

6. Fire Flower

Characters: Mario, Metal Mario

The Fire Flower item makes three fireballs revolve around your kart, then throws them all at once when the screen is tapped. This item works best on a narrow road with walls!

7. Boomerang

Characters: Baby Mario, Larry Koopa

The Boomerang flings out in front of you, hitting both players and coins, causing racers to spin out.

8. Heart

Characters: Peach, Daisy, Wendy O. Koopa

The Heart is a very powerful, defensive item that protects attacks against any other driver. That includes all of the powerful items like the Lightning. On top of that, you can stack up to 5 of them at once.

9. Yoshi’s Egg

Characters: Yoshi

This iconic item rolls around and homes in on the racer in front of you, before crashing into them and exploding into various items.

10. Bubble

Mario Kart Tour Items

Characters: Baby Peach, Baby Daisy, Baby Rosalina, Lemmy Koopa

The bubble is an item with mixed opinions. It keeps your character above the ground, making in invincible from items with a small speed boost. However, you also miss out on boost panels, making it slightly detrimental.

11. Banana Barrels

Characters: Diddy Kong

This item requires some skill to use but creates some serious hazards for the other racers. It shoots regular bananas out in front of your kart.

12. Mushroom Cannon

Characters: Peachette

The Mushroom Cannon is another item which has to be used carefully and with skill. Being the opposite of the Banana Cannon, it shoots out offensively-based Mushrooms. In order to best make use, you must collect all the Mushrooms that spit out to avoid other racers obtaining them.

13. Lucky Seven

Mario Kart Tour Items

Characters: Pauline

The Lucky Seven, first seen in Mario Kart Seven, rotates 7 different items around your kart. These items have changed since 7’s days, and are the Red Shell, Banana, Green Shell, Bob-omb, Super Horn, Mushroom, and Blooper in Tour.

Characters: Mario (Hakama)

The Coin Box is a powerful new item for extending your combos. It behaves similar to a coin frenzy by throwing out piles of coins in front of your kart for anyone to pick up. This may seem detrimental to your own race, but is definitely useful in gaining more overall race points.

Characters: Rosalina, Ludwig Von Koopa

The dash ring sets rings out on the track in front of you, granting a short boost when passed through. It rewards skill, and allows you to extend combos over potentially dead areas of the track.

So far, in Mario Kart Tour, we’ve had the chance to play over a large section of the courses – with more coming later in the season pass. As an editor’s note – A particular theme has risen, as I was making this list, in that Mario Kart Tour has an enormous amount of tracks that featured from Mario Kart Seven.

Here’s what we’ve seen, and had the ability to play so far:

1. New York Minute

mario kart tour courses, mario kart tour

Variations:

New York Minute R / T

Starting off on the new tracks, New York Minute is based on New York’s Central Park and Times Square. Its base version contains a mix of sharp corners, and long curves, perfect for reaching super mini turbos.

2. Toad Circuit

mario kart tour

Variations:

Toad Circuit R / T

Mario Kart Tour so far has had a heavy focus on Mario Kart 7 Tracks. Toad Circuit suits the game brilliantly, its mixture of challenging turns complements the overall simplicity of the layout. It also perfectly showcases the simple glider capabilities of Mario Kart Tour.

3. Rock Rock Mountain

mario kart tour

Variations:

Rock Rock Mountain R / T

Rock Rock Mountain pushes players to the edge of the game’s difficulty curve. With Nintendo’s newly introduced ‘Mirror Mode’ alternative, playing this track backwards is a real treat.

Read – Mario Kart Tour Items: The complete guide

4. Daisy Hills

mario kart tour

Variations:

Daisy Hills R / T

Daisy Hills’ feature in Mario Kart Tour may have come as a surprise to some. However, its ending glider section provided a large, open area that was perfectly suited to Mario Kart Tour’s imprecise controls. It fits the mechanics beautifully and looks visually pleasing to accompany.

5. Cheep Cheep Lagoon

Cheep Cheep Lagoon

Variations:

Cheep Cheep Lagoon R / T

Long underwater sections make for interesting and eventful races, which is just what Cheep Cheep Lagoon brings to the table. Keeping true to the original 3DS track, we see the same shortcuts and pathways on this near-untouched gem.

6. Shy Guy Bazaar

Shy Guy Bazaar

Variations:

Shy Guy Bazaar R / T

An interesting track choice, from the Mario Kart 7 game, was Shy Guy Bazaar. This track, on a smaller scale, has short lap times, and a mixture of complex lanes and corners. From a personal standpoint, I don’t think this track plays to the mechanics of Tour. I would have enjoyed seeing other tracks from the 3DS make an appearance.

7. Dino Dino Jungle

mario kart tour

Variations:

Dino Dino Jungle R / T

Another Challenging, yet suitable track, is Dino Dino Jungle. A series classic from Mario Kart: Double Dash made a reappearance in Mario Kart Seven (which seemed to be a recurring theme here!) and again in Mario Kart Tour.

8. Yoshi Circuit

mario kart tour

Yoshi Circuit

Variations:

Yoshi Circuit R / T

On paper, Yoshi Circuit was never going to be a well-suited track for Mario Kart Tour. However, it plays near perfectly. Its corners are immaculately scaled for drifting, and its ramps are placed for easy jumping without overshooting.

9. Bowser’s Castle 1

mario kart tour

Bowser’s Castle 1

Variations:

Bowser’s Castle R / T

Mario Kart Tour is filled with short, sweet, and playable gems from across Mario Kart history. Bowser’s Castle 1 from the GBA ticks all three boxes. It would not surprise if Nintendo bought us many Super Circuit tracks in upcoming seasons.

10. Koopa Troopa Beach

Koopa Troopa Beach

Variations:

Koopa Troopa Beach R / T

The N64 version of Mario Kart featured Koopa Troopa Beach, which was then again remade in Mario Kart Seven. This track contains a perfect amount of ramps, with a challenging shortcut near the middle, which suits the mechanics of Tour well.

11. Mario Circuit 1

Mario Circuit 1

Mario Circuit 1

Variations:

Mario Circuit R / T

Sometimes, simplicity makes the best racetracks. Mario Circuit 1 is a refreshing, fun, and easy track for all levels of players. The SNES days of Mario Kart were packed of these styles, and it would be highly probable if we saw more from Super Mario Kart.

12. Tokyo Blur

Variations:

Tokyo Blur R / T / R/T

Mario Kart Tour’s second original track is Tokyo Blur and follows the theme of the season. The original tracks follow a distinctive simplistic layout of a loop, with a stronger focus on the background aesthetics. Tokyo Blur is no exception.

13. Choco Island 2

Variations:

Choco Island 2 R / T

The SNES has bought back some recurring highlights in the Kart series. Choco Island 2 has further showcased the variability of Tour with the introduction of large mud puddles and a different colour palette entirely.

14. Kalimari Desert

Variations:

Kalimari Desert R / T

Kalimari Desert boasts a simple track design with one major mechanical difference: the train. In previous Kart games, the train halted racers completely, blocking off the track. Now the train initiates a jump boost upon impact, sending you sky-high.

15. Mario Circuit 2

Variations:

Mario Circuit 2 R / T

The much-needed sequel to Mario Circuit 1, Mario Circuit 2 has all the same charm the SNES version had. Following in Tour’s obsession with Mario Kart 7, the course has been replicated once again here and fits the mechanics perfectly.

16. Neo Bowser City

Variations:

Neo Bowser City R / T

Very soon, Mario Kart 7’s tracks will be playable on Mario Kart Tour, lowering the 3DS console into the grave. Jokes aside, Neo Bowser City plays near beautifully here, with the aid of smart steering. The scenery looks polished and the corners are scaled perfectly for Tour’s mechanics.

17. Rainbow Road

Variations:

Rainbow Road R / T

The third SNES remake that was also redone in Mario Kart 7 this season is Rainbow Road. An interesting choice to bring this particular edition of Rainbow Road to the game left me wondering if there was a better option. The corners and narrow sections cause smart steering to really kick into gear and often causes unwanted crashes.
