Chinese company ByteDance has acknowledged discussions with Tencent Games and other potential buyers regarding its gaming assets. This comes a couple of months after the TikTok owner officially distanced itself from the gaming universe to focus on other core businesses.
ByteDance and Tencent are yet to reach a final agreement
The heart of the matter dates back to November 2023, when ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang maker MOONTON Games, opted to bid goodbye to the gaming industry and undergo a restructuring of its Nuverse gaming brand, popular for games such as Marvel Snap, Earth: Revival and One Piece: The Voyage.
While there were also reports of the Chinese Company considering the sale of MOONTON Games, the CEO of the company Justin Yuan internally addressed and dismissed these speculations, confirming the company’s commitment to independent operations and dispelling any rumors.
ByteDance and Tencent are currently engaged in discussions concerning a potential deal that encompasses several widely popular video games published by ByteDance’s Nuverse gaming unit. Notable titles under consideration include Crystal of Atland and Earth: Revival. Despite ongoing talks, no final agreement has been reached, Reuters reports.
This development is indeed curious as ByteDance once was in a domestic rivalry with Tencent, which is recognized as the world leader in the gaming industry. While we don’t have details on other suiters, Tencent wouldn’t miss a lavishing opportunity to cement its authority even further.
