Mobile game developer Scopely has announced that the company has been acquired by Savvy Games Group in a deal estimated at $4.9 billion. The company behind popular award-winning mobile titles such as Stumble Guys, Kingdom Maker, and WWE Champions announced the deal on April 5th, 2023, while mentioning it as an “exciting new chapter”.
The deal ranks as the sixth-largest gaming acquisition in history
Founded in 2011, Scopely, Inc. is a mobile-first video game developer and publisher with headquarters in California. Scopely has partnered with investments in a variety of game studios in addition to internal game production facilities. However, Savvy Games, a unit of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, raised interest and paid $4.9 billion to acquire Scopely.
This transaction ranks as the sixth-largest gaming acquisition in history. For information, Microsoft’s huge $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard last year remains the largest acquisition in gaming history, which might still be untouchable at least for two to three years given the large amount the global giant has invested.
Scopely will continue to revolutionize the future of games, says Savvy CEO
Brian Ward, CEO of the Savvy Gaming Group and a former employee of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft, and Electronic Arts, led this acquisition and mentioned that his company anticipates assisting Scopely in achieving its goals faster. Also, Scopely will be continued to be led by co-CEOs Walter Driver and Javier Ferreira.
Brian Ward added: “Scopely is one of the fastest-growing games companies today, and we have long admired their ability to build loyal, engaged player communities. Under Walter and Javier’s stewardship, Scopely has proven to be an exceptional leader and will continue to revolutionize the future of games for years to come. We look forward to further accelerating the company’s ambitions and working together with their talented team of developers, designers, and publishers to create innovative and exciting new products for the gaming community across the world.”
Scopely claims that the agreement would accelerate the growth of their live games, slate, crew, and technology to deliver even more immersive experiences. They continue by saying that with Savvy, they are inspired to reach new audiences, keep working with the finest talent and studios in the business, and expand their reach through other strategic alliances and acquisitions.
