Microsoft gaming has acquired Activision Blizzard, the studio behind the hit game franchise Call of Duty, for $68.7 billion. The deal is projected to be finished by 2023. Activision themselves have acquired King, the studio behind the hit mobile game Candy Crush a few years ago. Recently Take-Two Interactive studio behind the Grand Theft Auto series has also acquired Zynga, a popular mobile game studio. This deal goes to show how important mobile gaming has become.
Activision themselves have experience in the mobile gaming space with their hit game Call of Duty Mobile. This deal will put Microsoft gaming third-largest by revenue behind Tencent and Sony. This also gives Microsoft gaming a competitive edge over its rival Sony with games like Call of Duty and Overwatch. Now Microsoft gaming also owns King which could help them ascertain a presence in Mobile gaming.
Sony and Microsoft don’t have any hit games on mobile. But this deal gives Microsoft an opportunity to bring some PC titles to mobile with King studio’s expertise. Until the transaction closes Microsoft and Activision will work independently.
Bobby Kotick the current CEO of Activision will continue to act as the CEO even after the deal but will be reporting Phil Spencer CEO of Microsoft gaming after the deal.
Microsoft’s note about the acquisition
According to Satya Nadella, the chairman and CEO of Microsoft,
Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft gaming said that “Players everywhere love Activision Blizzard games, and we believe the creative teams have their best work in front of them.”
