Many dreamt of playing as Nathan Drake or Kratos on mobile devices. And it seems there’s some really exciting news for mobile gamers around the globe. Sony CEO Jim Ryan dropped a big hint at a speech delivered at a strategy meeting on the company’s wishes to tap into the mobile games industry with PlayStation IPs.
PlayStation IPs might release for smartphones in the future
Ryan confirmed that the company had been looking at how their audience enjoys their content and that they were looking at ideas to provide more options for gamers and fans. He remarked that “Mobile is just one of the areas we are exploring to reach millions of gamers beyond our platforms” and that statement itself seems to be enough of a hint that a popular PlayStation IP could make its way to mobile devices in the not-so-distant future.
Sony has always been known primarily for its PlayStation line of consoles and developing games exclusive to the console but in recent years that policy has seen a slight shift. Last year, Horizon: Zero Dawn became one of the first PlayStation exclusives to release for PC. This was followed up by the zombie-based survival game Days Gone, that released earlier this month. This combined with the latest comments shows the company’s desire to venture into other platforms and expand its audience.
This latest statement doesn’t exactly come as a big surprise either as recently there was a job listing for a newly created position or “Head of Mobile at PlayStation studio”. Sony isn’t exactly the first big gaming giant to enter the mobile games market either as Nintendo has already brought a host of their famous IPs such as Mario Kart to smartphone devices.
The catalogue of PlayStation exclusives is highly varied and impressive and this move would make them accessible to a wider population and at a cheaper cost.
