Another month, another milestone for the recently released smash-hit Genshin Impact! Genshin Impact becomes the fastest game to reach 1 billion dollars in player spending on both iOS App Store and Google Play combined, as reported by SensorTower. Taking 6 months to generate 1 billion dollars from player purchases, the mobile RPG beats the previous record held by Pokémon Go at 9 months.
Average player spending per month has been in and around 160 million dollars per month. For March, it is currently at 148 million dollars. Overall, it has been a very strong month for Genshin Impact, as it stands third for revenue generation in both the App Store and Play Store. This is behind only Tencent’s PUBG Mobile and Honor of Kings for the past 30 days.
Genshin Impact: One of the most successful mobile game launches
Genshin Impact launched in September 2020 and was touted as one of the most successful mobile gaming launches in history. The game earned a staggering $245 million in the first month of its launch, propelling it up the grossing charts. The popularity of the game skyrocketed to an insane level such that the Discord server created for the game became the biggest Discord server available. The game is also available on other platforms such as the PC, PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch. But, the mobile market remains its biggest strength. The aesthetics of the game itself have been likened to the universally acclaimed Nintendo exclusive, Breath of the Wild. This said to have been a factor in its appeal and popularity.
While the game itself is free to play, the smartly implemented gacha system means that the game is clever at making players spend money to buy in-game items. So, it is no surprise to see it generate large amounts of revenue every month. MiHoYo’s smash hit is a favourite particularly among Chinese audiences but it has also retained popularity among Western audiences. This is something quite rare for gacha games. While there has been some criticism of the games’ gacha system, the popularity of Genshin Impact seems to be showing no signs of slowing down. There is no doubt that Genshin will eventually end up in the hall of fame for mobile video games.
International Impact
China ranks as the No. 1 market for spending in the mobile version of Genshin Impact, generating $302 million to date which accounts for 29.5 % of global player spending followed by Japan who ranks no. 2, generating 27.2%. The United States come in no. 3 picking up approximately $189 million. The App Store accounts for the lion’s share of $615 million, which is 60% of the total revenue generated, followed by Google Play, meanwhile, accounts for $409.4 million, or 40 % of player spending.
It took 2020’s top revenue-generating title PUBG Mobile just over 16 months to hit its $1 billion in player spendings. Recently, Brawl Stars by Supercell surpassed $1 billion in lifetime revenue, largely due to the powerful rise of in-app purchases in 2020. Few mobile titles have had such earliest successes as Genshin Impact, having achieved this feat in less than 6 months. This is surely an impressive feat from miHoyo, the makers of Genshin Impact.
